I hesitantly removed the note from the captain’s trembling hand and slowly unfolded the jasmine scented stationery. I read the note quietly, with gentleness, because of the distress evident in our visitor...

Mr Dearest Phineas,

My heart is shattered by what I must tell you.
Although I have loved and respected you for
these many years, I have come to realize that
we cannot in good conscience continue to make
plans for a future together.

While you were so nobly engaged to Her Majesty’s
service, my life was being twisted by a cruel fate.
If we were to marry, a situation which is best left
shrouded and buried would, I fear, eventually surface
to besmirch your honor and disgrace your name.

For your sake, my sake, and for England’s sake,
I must insist we put a hasty and tearful close to
our joyful plans. Forgive me for informing you
this way, but I felt that I would not be able to
look into your dear face to reveal such a dark event.
